MetrOasis® News

I recently updated the state board stats (on metroasis.com) because a mysterious caller contacted PostSecondary and wanted me to document my claim that we have the best state board pass rate in the state.

This annoyed me firstly, because we actually started our esthetician program about a year before we wanted to simply because the state board pass rate was so amazingly horrible. Secondly, this annoyed me because the state agency - the Board of Barbers and Hairdressers, provide this data, and the other state agency - PostSecondary, both have much better availability to acquire this data than I do. Also, every single school beauty school in Alaska HAS this data at their finger tips as they are mailed this information quarterly. So, why I would have to confirm state data to a state agency seems quite silly to me. The state has this information and all of the other schools have this information.

But, I run a school here so I did. I'm just not sure that I did it in a way that the concerned citizen wanted me to. But hey, they don't get to decide EVERYTHING in my life. The information was taken from the public arena, it is openly published on the Internet for anyone to see. I just referred to it.

The schools that had an esthetician program before we started ours didn't put anything into their programs. For YEARS!
No money,
no time,
no effort,
nothing.

So we started our program and had a 100% pass rate for the first two years. I decided to put the actual stats that we received from the Board of Barbers and Hairdressers up instead of talking about the rates. I also contacted PostSecondary and explained these stats to them. Not wanting to be the only school in Alaska singled out for this additional requirement, I rewrote the bottom section of metroasis.com to include some of the quotes from the other beauty schools. If you missed them, I've listed them here as well.

The last report we received (July 24 2009) from the Board of Barbers and Hairdressers states -

Totals including MetrOasis®
36 people passed the practical exam and 5 failed the practical exam.
35 people passed the written exam and 14 people failed the written exam.
This means 87% passed the practical exam.
This also means that 71% passed the written exam.

Totals excluding MetrOasis®
29 passed the practical exam and 5 failed the practical exam.
85% pass rate on practical exam.
29 passed written and 13 failed the written exam.
69% pass rate on written exam.

MetrOasis® only
7 passed the practical exam and 0 failed the practical exam.
100% pass rate on practical exam.
6 passed the written exam and 1 failed the written exam.
85% pass rate on written exam.

So, do you want an 85% pass rate (other schools) on your practical exam or a 100% (MetrOasis®) ?
Do you want a 69% pass rate (other schools) on your written exam or an 85% (MetrOasis®) ?

If you combine the written and the practical exams,

the other schools combined have a pass rate of 76%.

The combined written/practical exam

pass rate for MetrOasis® is 92.85%

So, if ANY school in Alaska has a better pass rate than this...
Please send it to us so that we can brag about YOU as well.
We've been waiting several years for this report to arrive... but it hasn't... still !

IS MetrOasis® really the best? Yes. We really are.
Just this week I had to document the stats just above. There are the public stats there for everybody to see.
Let's look at some more...

Gabriel's makes this claim - "The quality of our teaching staff is unsurpassed."
and...
"Thank you for inquiring about this school, the most progressive place to
prepare for a successful and rewarding career in the beauty industry."
and...
"This school has earned the reputation for maintaining the highest standards in education, quality of work and innovation, making us the best choice for your future career."

One would think that having a unsurpassed teaching staff would result in some great reviews. Or at least ONE?
Has anyone actually had a service done at Gabriel's? There are no reviews on the internet I could find.
The review would go here... IF I could find one. WHAT "reputation"?

Academy of Hair makes this claim - ""AHD has been educating Alaska’s top beauty industry professionals since 1986."
and...
"Our commitment to your education is reflected by our belief in individualized and one-one instruction and training."

 by marilea 98 06/14/2008
"I went to school here for Esthetics and wasn't satisfied with the course.
They didn't have an actual Esthetic teacher present and so my classmates and
I had to pretty much learn most of the course on our own and help each other.
The instructor for that course didn't really have the knowledge either.
She was mostly concentrating on her clients that booked for hair appointments.
They are also very unsanitary since they reuse sponges. I guess they are stingy with their supplies.
I don't recommend this school at all. They don't know how to teach. It's a waste of time and money.
The owners were also quite rude as well".
http://local.yahoo.com/info-22339059-academy-of-hair-design-anchorage?tab=reviews#reviews
Wouldn't "educating Alaska's top beauty industry professionals" include actually HAVING a teacher "present"?
"One-one" training, or just "One" training, you know, where you train yourself?
By the way, it is illegal to book clients when you are supposed to be the instructor "on the floor".

Trendsetters makes this claim -
"We have trained more top professionals than any other school in Alaska."
and...
"...best beauty school in Anchorage."

 anita e., Anchorage, AK
This Is a SCHOOL!!! quit talking about it as if it was a professional salon.

I went to school here in the 80's and glad I left when I did,
it was not at all professional nor did most of my customers realize
that this was a school and not a real salon.
We were taught the quickest short cuts on hair, given little time in theory and practice
other than practice on a real paying customer,
I would say on half got what they wanted and the rest had the
wool pulled over their eyes, literally. I did not like the 'parties'
held on holidays, competitions and birthdays....booze should not be a part of a school at any time.
Please don't get talked into something you don't want,
by a pretty face and then get sucked into products you don't need (too expensive)
and then have to pay for it from your wallet and dignity.
Better to go to a real salon unless you are ready to become a part of some students 'practice' session.

Does THIS sound like the training a "top professional" should receive?

 by gothgrrl 05/30/2008
THe only reason i go to this place is because i am so used to going there and the cuts are cheap.
the stylists have no sense of humor and, just, yikes. they do tend to be tolerant
when i bring in my son for a haircut tho. in all the 20 or so haircuts i have gotten there,
only once have they given me what i want. the instructors who come to
check my hair after are not gentle people, after the last time my head hurt for 2 days after.
after that experience i will never go there again.

Istructors are not gentle... head hurt for 2 days...

 by Donnie 02/11/2008 MEN BEWARE!!!!
I recently had my hair done there and I will positivley never go back.
You would think cutting a military style haircut would be easy. Guess again.
I finaly had enough of trying to explain to the person that all she had to do is put a guard on the
clipers and go over the entire thing.....Not at all what I got in the end.
The hair cut was uneven in several spots and I looked like I tryed to do it myself.
Dont depend on the instructors to come over and check your hair after either...all he did
was come over and check the back of my neck. If you go to this establishment
please be aware you may have to go somewhere else to get it fixed.

Instructors don't check haircuts properly?

 by Bullet 01/03/2008
Great Owner, Dennis is a caring man, who looks out for the students that attend his school.
Only complaint is Cindy, an instructor. She treats the students like crap, with no respect.
She is completely rude and I have personally seen her talk down to students in front of clients.
She also tells students personal information about other students, which she has no ethical right to do so.

http://local.yahoo.com/info-22341000-trend-setters-school-of-beauty-anchorage?tab=reviews&sortreviews=1&allreviews=1#reviews
Instructor treats students like "crap"? No respect?
These sound like strange ways to train "top professionals", or ANYBODY for that matter. THIS is the "best"?

So... This section has been updated now. Everybody happy?

So, now ALL of the schools can equally document their claims instead of just me due to some anonymous caller.

You know... they be careful what you wish for. I think that really means, THINK about what you are asking for.

It is absolutely impossible for each of the schools to actually have the "best teaching staff in Alaska", because this claim is exclusive and contradicts the other school's claims that make this same claim. Does the "best" mean they have been teaching the longest? They have the best training so they have more information and techniques to pass on? They care the most? They have the best teaching philosophy? They have an attitude best matched by teaching?

If these statements were actually true, the reviews of their schools would reflect this "fact" which it clearly does not. Nor have they even attempted to "document" these "facts". Clearly a school with an average of 1 1/2 star rating by their own students and customers can not possibly FACTUALLY claim to be the best, but they do, both in their written materials and on the Internet. Even a school with an average of 3 1/2 stars can't FACTUALLY claim to be better than a school with a 5 star rating.

It never amazes me when I am called to perform at a higher level than others simply because someone was "concerned" and feigned an attempt at "fairness", when their own materials clearly show that they have no interest in "fairness" whatsoever!

If some, just some, of the effort taken by other schools to snipe at me was redirected at improving their own business, their own policies, their own TEACHING ABILITIES, there would be much less reason to snipe at me, because their own ratings would improve. MY blood pressure would naturally lower itself, and I could get on with the day to day operation of my business without having to deal with these silly matters!

Oh oh! I almost forgot...

I'm sure that I will receive a phone call soon because I also didn't include MY reviews, even though they are there for the entire world to see. So, here they are -

I love this place. Great service, great value and an ultra
cool vibe for the shop. I love getting several services

Metroasis is a great place to go for haircuts! My daughter
has long thick hair. I have short, thin hair. When styling
our hair the students take that into consideration, ask
questions, and offer suggestions which I appreciate. We
always end up with a great looking cut! My daughter also
has her hair colored there and the results are always perfect.
Everyone at Metroasis is friendly, helpful, and professional.
I recommend them to friends all the time! Liz W.

After a recommendation from a friend, my family started going to
Metroasis. Over the past few years my two daughters and I have
had haircuts, colors, manicures, waxing, facials, tanning, updo's
and more. Every single visit has been fantastic. The students
are well trained and well supervised. The owner/instructors
Sue & Sigel are always right there, actively teaching and
monitoring every procedure. The ambiance is laid back, fun
and friendly and a lot of loving attention has gone into the decor.
The customer service is top notch, you'll be made to feel
welcome from your first visit. The Cajun food and coffee from
the Fire and Ice Cafe next door are delicious! The prices are
quite good too, which makes it fun to pamper yourself a bit.
I'd highly recommend you go try it for yourself!

Hooked!!: My husband and I have been going to
MetrOasis for 3 years. We picked them for their
great tanning rates and convenient location....
we keep going back for the warm hospitality and
professional quality we receive at every visit. We
started with tanning and Sue & Sigel hooked us
with all the extras. I've tried every service and am
happy to recommend each one. I have worked
with 3 students and have loved every result. Try
them once and you'll never go anywhere else again!
Thanks to the MetrOasis team for all your hard work

Can't beat the experience: Metroasis is THE BEST
place in town to find a great haircut, color, process,
and/or style for an amazing price. The students are
extremely well-trained and the owners are present and
walking around to make sure everything is going well.
Services also include facials, manicures and tanning.
To top off a great visit, attached to the salon is a
cajun restuarant/espresso bar. I highly reccommend
      visiting!!!! A+++++++++++

going there as a client for over four years and
have been a student for a little over two months.
They make it a fun place to be everyday.
There is always something entertaining and
having a cafe right next door is great (especiall
if you're a fan of their corn muffins and special

Let me guess....

Now somebody will complain because they don't like looking at all of these stars or they don't like the number "5".

Yes, we really are the best beauty school in Alaska.

Hey... somebody had to be! ;-)

PARIS

We’re off to Paris. Boy are we ready too! We really need a break. We almost finished our remodeling, but it looks like a couple of things will have to wait until we get back. That’s OK too because we may be able to use some of the inspiration of our trip for some new ideas.

PARIS BEAUTY TOURS

We also need to develop some more contacts so that we can get one of our new projects finished. We have started parisbeautytours.com and hope to make our first tour in Paris early next year. We are putting together a fashion/beauty industry tour which will include -

a one day makeup training,

a one day hair training,

half day waxing,

a tour of 3 different salons,

a group dinner,

flowers and a bottle of wine in your room when you arrive,

a fashion show at Printemps,

a fashion show at Galleries Lafayette,

a half day training on “going international”,

a day of shopping at secret Paris boutiques,

a tour in the fabric district of Paris,

two independent days,

round trip airfare from the US to Paris,

all airport taxes and fees,

7 nights hotel & taxes,

orientation and travel guide,

for $3,995. We will only be taking 12 people on each trip, and we are planning an average of 3 trips each year.

If THIS trip doesn’t recharge your battery and inspire you to more creative international beauty art, then you’re probably already dead!

If you want to check out some of the things we’re going to be doing on this trip you can check out our MindMeister page here - http://www.mindmeister.com/13884606

CLASS START DATES

We are booking up fast for classes this year which means that we only have openings for class starts several months out. If you know someone who is interested in attending our school, tell them to get their online entrance exam and their interview done soon so that they can get on the master student calendar otherwise they’ll probably have to attend next year or go to another school and miss out on our great training!

THE ECONOMY

It is interesting to see how the economy is changing our industry. Some of the fluffy, no-content salons and spas are struggling to stay open but the places that offer good value for money spent, are doing quite well. In fact, last year was our best year ever. We will be expanding our service menu in several places this year. We realize that this is not a go-or-don’t-go issue as much as it is a where-you-go issue. That is, people are going to be going to salons and spas this year. They’re not just going to stay home and stop getting their hair cut, colored, or stop getting facials. People are going to just be a bit pickier about where they go, so our focus this year is making MetrOasis® THE place to go since you’re going to be going anyway. If you are going to go to a salon anyway, shouldn’t you get the absolute best value you can for your hard earned and scarce dollars? We think so! We are being effected in some relatively minor ways already by suppliers in the lower 48 or in other countries that are struggling with the economy.

SOLICITATION OF OUR CLIENTS BY STUDENTS

On a different note, we have had some problems this year with students actively soliciting our clients while they’re standing right in the middle of my business. We’ve had really minor issues with this in the past, but this year we even had a student stand not further than 10 feet from me and tell a client that “We’re updating our files and I need you to put your name, address, and phone number down on this paper for us.” I asked who was updating our files (since they're MY files and I knew that I wasn't updating them), and they explained that they were sending thank you notes to “their” clients for allowing this student to work on them. The salon that they are going to be working in, you know... the one they’re stealing my clients from me and sending to..., this salon would fire them on the spot for illegally soliciting clients from them. These salons, if found to be encouraging this kind of unethical behavior, will be eliminated from our “mixers” list and will not be invited to participate in any upcoming mixers. Oh, mixers are where we invite salon and spa owners to come into our business to a breakfast meeting to meet our students and to talk about their individual salons or spas. It gives our students a good idea of what different salons and spas have to offer them as employees. Most of our students know where they will be working by the time they graduate from our programs.

The students that enroll into our program enroll so that they can get real salon experience on real clients instead of spending all their time working on manikins like so many state programs do, or doing self-study from the text like so many schools in Alaska do. The only reason our students have real clients to work on is because we have steadily built our clientele year after year since 1995. Then, after sending our clients to these very few unethical students, clients of ours who have seen student after student for over a decade, and when these unethical students get their requirements from us, and the education from us, and get their hours from us with these same clients, to then sacrifice both our future success and the future success of the students that will be working in their station after they graduate... it just boggles the mind how self-centered, selfish, unethical, and clueless some of these students can be. We spend over $20,000 each year on advertising. So, after spending over a quarter of a million dollars to get clients for these students to work on, it just floors me that a student that pays less than half of the tuition rates of the lower 48 states, while we pay shipping rates that makes all of our products cost three time more... to then have the attitude "I've got MY stuff now so go ungh ungh ungh yourself...??? I don't even know what to say. It actually embarrasses me to have accepted these students into our program and then to expose our really great students to this kind of behavior and it really un-nerves me! I hope that the salons that hire these kind of students without talking to me first know what they're getting into! If they do call... I have some amazing, talented students I'd love to send them, and then they won't be having this same problem a year from now when the student they encouraged to steal my clients is standing on their salon floor stealing their clients.

Do I sound a little bent over this? I guess being betrayed by someone I'm working so hard to make successful kind of bends me out of shape a little. I'm reminded of some of the quips between Lady Astor and Winston Churchill, where Lady Astor walked up to Winston Churchill and said "I perceive that YOU sir, are drunk!" For which Winston Churchill responded "And I perceive, MAM, that YOU are ugly, but tomorrow I shall be sober!". I may get a little bent over situations like this, but tomorrow I shall leave for Paris, while the very few unethical students that I am subjected to will still be here in Anchorage remaining as unethical as ever. I have a feeling that I will be a lot less bent over this when I return. I think that in the long run that the true nature of these few bad apples will be found out and that this kind of behavior is more damaging to them than to me.

NON-SOLICATION POLICY

SO... I can’t imagine that a grown up, a thinking, living person can’t see that this is grossly unethical behavior, but apparently I have to deal with this now, on top of several other unethical behaviors that we already face. So, we rewrote the catalog, we rewrote our policies, and we rewrote our student enrollment contract to deal with this problem. We also contacted PostSecondary and explained what was going on. Our new changes have already been approved. So if ANY student approaches you to induce you to leave our business to go to theirs, please let us know. This problem has been addressed legally and administratively and we have a process in place now to address this gross breach of ethics within our school and we’d appreciate you letting us know if this happens to you. We have one of the most difficult marketing jobs on the planet because we are attracting clients that could go to any salon or spa in the state, but that are willing to have students work on them because they are trying to support the future success of those students. We also do our upmost to make our students successful in their future careers so we get truly offended, offended to the bone, that after sharing trade secrets, client information, advanced techniques, business strategies, marketing concepts, that these same students would then completely abandon OUR future success to promote THEIR future success only. We operate our business in a symbiotic manner so that both the students and MetrOasis® benefit. But when a student changes our business structure from a symbiotic structure to a parasitic structure, where ONLY the student benefits and MetrOasis® suffers, then the student clearly has to go. MetrOasis® is the ONLY business of its kind in the United States and we work very hard to protect our investment.

EXPANSION... BYE BYE TANNING

As for future changes, we will be getting rid of the espresso cart in the back of the salon (you may not have even noticed it there) and we are putting Sigel & Sue’s station there which will make room for one more student station where Sigel and Sue are working now. We will also be getting rid of the tanning bed to make room for another esthetics room, and then later we will be getting rid of the HEX tanning room to make room for another esthetics room. But the bed will be the first to go in near future. This will give us 5 esthetics rooms, with the HEX making the 6th. This means that each esthetics student will be assigned to a specific room and won’t have to be dragging their equipment from their station or from room to room in the future. This also means that I won’t have to stop what I’m doing several times each day to track down a specific machine that was moved from one location to another. Each machine will be bolted to the wall or floor and it won’t move. Not without moving the wall too!

NEW EQUIPMENT / NEW SERVICES

We are looking at cellulite massaging machines and an RF machine (radio frequency) for cellulite and firming treatments which we will be including sometime this year. We are also going to expand our light therapy services. So watch for these new body service additions to our service menu. After I return from Paris I'll post a few photos of this new equipment so that you can check them out while we're making space for them.

ADVERTISING... YEAH INTERNET!

We have fired the Anchorage Daily News as one of our advertisers and we have changed our ads in the Yellow Pages this year and have shifted a certain amount of focus to Internet advertising and marketing. If you are interested in saving some money on your next visit, click on the “specials” button at metroasis.com and follow the directions and you can help us in our efforts.

MISSING VIDEOS

I guess along with the great newsletter I wrote a couple of day ago, that most of the videos on this site also disappeared. I don't know why, they just did. SO... I'll rewrite those pages when I get back.

BROCHURES

We also printed a lot of brochures, I mean a LOT of them! So don’t feel shy about taking a few with you and handing them out to your friends. If you write your name on them and your friends bring them in, we’ll do a nice secret little something for you.

Well, better run now, I only have 36 hours before we leave for Paris and I still have a ton of things to do! Au revoir!

One of the best new things we've done is that we've replaced most of our traditional retail stands with some great European antiques. We're working on the finishing touches in our facial rooms also.

We went from this -

Wait until we're done with this project!
